Portable heater ignites a carpet and causes home fire, in Great Cornard, UK - 1 injured

A young working mother fears she may face a costly bill to pay for the clean-up of her home damaged in a fire accidently started on tuesday 24th March 2009, by her baby daughter. Firefighters from Sudbury and Long Melford attended the blaze which started in the living room at around 7.40am, after 10-month-old Evie knocked over a heater and its safety mechanism failed. The heater is meant to turn off if it is knocked over, but in this case it set the carpet in the lounge on fire within seconds. Paramedics had to treat 27-year-old Miss Shaw for smoke inhalation, but Evie and eight-year-old son Charlie escaped without injury.
